Saheb
My name is Suyash,a computer engineer by profession.I live in the capital of our nation.I commute by my car to reach office and to get back to the home.I had a shocking incident when I was returning to home from my work.
2014,It near about 9.30 pm,I was driving my car to get back to the home. While driving I received a call from my home.I was talking on the phone.A constable saw me and he indicated me to stop the car. Then he knocked on the window glass with his stick.I opened the window.
He: Attending phone calls while driving is illegal,Don’t you know this?
I: Yes Sir,I know. Please start legal procedure for this,I will comply with rules.
He: You’re needed to pay Rs.2,000/- as per the rule.
I: Sorry Saheb (Sir),I’m not carrying money right now. Please make a fine receipt,I will pay it in the court by tomorrow.
The constable said with an anger,”Don’t fall in legal procedure,Finish this matter by just paying Rs.1,000/-.I understood that he was looking for a bribe from me.But I was really not having cash with me.I answered him,”Sir,I can’t pay anything now,you can take my driving license.I will pay a fine in the court and I will get my license my back.” He opened my car’s door and got into the car.He told me to drive the car.
I was shocked with this act but didn’t ask anything because arguing with a policeman can be dangerous.I drove the car for next 5 minutes.I really not knowing what was running in the constable's mind.He asked me to stop a car.I followed his instruction. He pointed at an ATM and said,”Go there and withdraw Rs.1,000/-.It shocking for me but I had no other option.I withdrew money and handed over to him.He put money in his pocket and said,”Now,you can drive to your home.”
As per the Transparency International’s report, 48% of poor people of our nation are paying a bribe to policemen for various reasons. The report says,In the year 2008,the bribe paid to policemen was amounted Rs.883 crores.People has fear of policemen even if they’re innocent.Corruption starts when Public servant turns into Saheb for public.
The author is neither vilifying any department nor targeting all public servant. It was an attempt to flashlights on corrupt practices. There are millions of good policemen working hard for the society. There is less population of corrupt people who are ruining the reputation.
